Back from BC

Well, I am somewhat recovered from the BC trip! It was a rush to get out there, but the trip itself was excellent. After finishing off my practicum on April 30th, then "Capstone" on the 1st of May, I had almost one day to get ready for the trip. Jon and I borrowed my parents' car and drove around the city getting errands done, and then went to Altona for the night.

The next morning, we left around 5:30 am and began our adventures out West! The main reason for our trip was to attend our friends Trev and Laceydawn's wedding. Jon was in the wedding party, and we wanted to spend as much time as possible with Jon's high school buddies (Trev, Nick, and Mike). Here are the bare bones of the trip:

- drove from Altona on May 2nd
- stopped in Calgary for 2 nights with family
- drove to Summerland
- stayed with Lorne, Nada, and their girls
- visited with Trev and Laceydawn
- visited with Nick and Mike
-"hike" on Giant's Head Mountain
-bike riding with Jon around Lake Okanagan
- wine tasting with the in-laws at Dirty Laundry
- wine tasting/tour with Nick and Mike
- wedding at the Lake Okanagan Resort
-all nighter drive-home
-home!

Glad to be home! Now to start some new adventures here..subbing and looking for a home in Hamilton!

I'm a Sub!

No...not the underwater transportation vehicle that's sung as 'yellow,' but the teacher kind! I am very excited to officially be a substitute! I received a call tonight letting me know that I had an "awesome interview" and that I can now sub in the division I applied to! This is something I needed after a day like today--nothing too dreadful happened, but it was one of those days where you feel worn down and beat afterwards. That phone call was just the perk I needed! That and the cake Jon and I are going out for soon!
As a 5th year Education student where things are coming to a close, I am feeling it go by too fast, yet not fast enough! I am so eager to jump into the teaching world as an independent teacher! I really feel the "I'm done" sensation, and as I still have 6 days of practicum left, I need to push that to the side and really give to my students.

Phew! Six days to go.

Pictures

I haven't uploaded pictures from my camera in ages, and I finally had some time to do it tonight! As a result, I present to you a few "recent" pictures...

Here's Halle (my cutie pie neice!) and I in the freezing wind on our way to a family dinner...I think in late February...

And then there is Capo and I for an Easter photoshoot. I was trying to get him to be an Easter Guinea Pig...isn't he the cutest?

Here are my buddies from university (Arlee, Megan, Melissa, and Laurie) in our last university class in the B Ed program! We've had tons of fun together these last 2 years.

And this is from April's visit last weekend--we had supper together...can you tell Randall and I like to make faces in pictures?

Brain Break

Monday began my 2nd week of 4 1/2 weeks of final practicum. I came home yesterday with aching legs and feet..but I'm now recovered. It's going well so far, which I am really thankful for.

Some recent "events":

- Practicum starting
- Taking care of Ayii during Spring Break (we had 2 other boys over one night and was that ever entertaining!)
- Alicia and Rob's social
- Jon's sister April visiting from New Brunswick
- Practicum starting again--I'm done on the 30th!
- The purchase of a new Macbook--man it's awesome to be married students with more than one computer to use! (This could have been even more timely, seeing as I will no longer be a student in 22 days, but with Jon's school next year and my teaching, this will be a useful item)
- Beautiful weather finally arriving *hope it stays*!
- Stupid spring bugs showing up around the house/vacuuming

I am so excited to be done school and be able to hang out with friends more consistently.

This is somewhat of a disjointed post, but I'm saving all my eloquence and organized writing for my kid's worksheets/activities etc. these days. My brain needs a break!

A Couple of Announcements

Happy Easter! Happy Spring!

Besides these two exciting happenings, Jon and I have another piece of official news to share (some of you know this already, and no, I'm not pregnant)...Jon has been accepted to McMaster University in Hamilton! We are heading out this August, and will be living there for a year. There were two options as far as a Master's in History; one involved a year with more coursework and writing an article, the other involving two years with less coursework and writing a thesis. Jon chose the first option (as time-wise it is awesome and less costly) and with more course work there is more opportunity to experience more variety/range vs. a complete focus on a thesis topic.
As you can see in the picture, McMaster has a beautiful campus. Now that we know where we are off to, we have a lot of planning to do for the move!

I'm also pleased to announce that I'm going to be an auntie again...Jon's sister April is expecting for September! We are all very excited for her and Jordan.

Monday I start my teaching block...think of me!

Recent Excitement

Well, a BIG congratulations to Kristy and Graham on the successful delivery of Norah Marie Friesen yesterday, March 15th! Although 9 1/2 weeks early, Norah is doing well. If you are someone who prays, please keep this family in your prayers for the next while.

After a lot of worry with yesterday's events, it was followed up by another event this evening.

Janessa and I were on our way to Superstore from my parent's house tonight, and we saw a man waving at cars by the train tracks on Fermor. At first I thought he was hitchhiking, but by the way he was waving his arms, it looked more as though something was wrong. No one was stopping for him.

Wondering if we should stop, I looked down the train tracks to see a person lying down farther down the tracks, and another person standing beside the one on the ground.

Janessa and I immediately decided to call my parents, and as we were turning around to go back to the man, I told my dad the situation and asked him to meet us at the tracks so that we had someone else to be with us and help. We ran up to the man, who no one had stopped for, still, and asked him what was wrong. He said his friend was having seizures and needed help. As we talked, a woman (the one standing by the man on the tracks) came too, telling us the same thing. So we called 911...and while I was talking with the respondent, Janessa and I started walking over to the man as he was now lying there alone. While I was talking still, we noticed the friends were walking away and we didn't understand why. Janessa and I helped keep the man on his side as told by the paramedic phone respondent, my dad soon showed up, and then 2 police cars and an ambulance came.

I was so incensed that no one else had bothered to stop--and I knew I wasn't the only person to have seen the guy lying on the tracks, or the man waving for help! The man trying to get help for his friend was Aboriginal, and I can't help but wonder if people would have been more inclined to help had the person been of a different ethnicity.

The friends were nowhere to be found and the man was helped. My guess as to why the friends left early was that they knew help was on the way, their friend was now safe, and they wanted to avoid the police for whatever reason(s).

When talking to the police, one thanked us for showing compassion and care, and for helping someone in need, as it was nice to see a glimpse of humanity. In my head I was thinking...what the heck else would I do?! It makes me sad to know that not all people will help one another.
